About the Surfest Wandiyali Indigenous Classic Cultural Gathering
Established in 1985, Surfest Newcastle Australia is one of Australia’s longest running surfing festivals.
The event is currently held at Merewether Beach, a recognised Australian National Surfing Reserve in the Newcastle area.
Wandiyali has been the Corporate Sponsor of the Indigenous Classic for over 10years. This historic event is an important part of Surfest and offers the nation’s biggest purse for an Indigenous surfing competition.
In what has been described as a ‘modern day gathering’ Indigenous surfer’s travel from around the nation to compete, from Cape York to Port Kembla!
2019 is shaping up to be the BIGGEST Wandiyali Indigenous Classic to date, with the competition changing to a weekend format. It is expected that we will have many more competitors and a whole lot more spectators.
The event will commence on Saturday 17 February 2018 and conclude with finals on Sunday 18 February 2018.
As a part of the festivities, Wandiyali will be showcasing Indigenous culture over the course of the Saturday. The day will commence with a ‘Welcoming Ceremony’ at the main stage, including an Acknowledgement to Country, Smoking Ceremony, dance and music performance.
As the heats begin for the day (starting with the Junior’s and Women’s events) the Cultural Gathering will also begin up at Jefferson Park. Here, a gathering of market stalls and activities in the main activity tent will be held with some foods and beverages on offer.
The Cultural Gathering is aimed at promoting and celebrating diversity of Indigenous Cultures around the world, with the main focus being on Australian’s Indigenous heritage and culture.
