Cessnock Youth Entertainment Committee Win Indent Grant

On the good news front, MusicNSW recently announced the recipients of the Indent Event Development Grants Program for events in 2018. With two levels of funding, the grants support teams of young people who are interested in staging their own all-ages, drug and alcohol-free music events. Indent event development grants are open to a group of at least five young people (aged 12-25) in partnership with a support organisation such as a local council or local youth service.

Cessnock Youth Entertainment Committee (CYEC), were once again successful with a grant for $5000 which they will put to good use during Youth Week 2018, to stage YouthFest @ Cessnock Skate Park Saturday 14th April from 10am till 4pm. This committee have a strong long-running connection to the Cessnock community and have staged a truckload of events over their 13 year history as well as holding a very long partnership with the Groovin’ The Moo festival coordinating the Youth Volunteer Program. They are also a driving force behind the success of Youth Week in Cessnock.

Gig shout outs to these young peeps making a massive impact in their local community.

Empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in child protection decision-making

The SNAICC Report on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family-led Decision Making Trials in Queensland January 2016 to June 2017 provides an overview of the trial design, purpose and implementation support provided by SNAICC. The report also presents key findings and makes 24 recommendations to inform future roll out of family-led decision makin.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander family-led decision making trials were introduced in response to recommendations for reform to the child protection system proposed in Taking Responsibility: A Roadmap for Queensland Child Protection, the final report of the Queensland Child Protection Commission of Inquiry (2012).

A comprehensive evaluation report on the trials will be available soon from research partners Winangali and Ipsos Australia.

Child protection Australia 2016-17 report

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) has released Child protection Australia 2016-17. The report includes detailed statistical information on state and territory child protection and support services, and selected characteristics of children receiving these services.

During 2016–17, 168,352 (30.8 per 1,000) Australian children received child protection services (investigation, care and protection order and/or were in out-of-home care). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were 7 times as likely as non-Indigenous children to have received child protection services. This report also showed that children from geographically remote areas were more likely to be the subject of a substantiation, or be in out-of-home care than those from major cities.
